Comedy Central launched....

PEO TV launched Comedy Central India with effect from yesterday. As the name suggests this channel broadcasts programmes from the comedy genre. 

This is seen as a positive step by PEO TV and will no doubt prove to be a popular one. At the moment it is available on a-la-carte basis of Rs 50/= and is available free of charge on the "Titanium Package".

We hope PEO TV takes steps to add AXN next, since this regarded as a basic channel on pay television platforms.

PEO TV woes - Picture freezing

We have received complaints from subscribers in several areas that the PEO TV reception gets stuck quite often. Even though advertise proudly that they don't have problems when it rains, it seems that PEO TV's problems occur when it doesn't rain. 

According to the reports, nothing is being spared from the problem, usually the STB displays an error message such as "WAN network failure" or something similar and the picture pauses and picks up elsewhere. This is particularly annoying in the event of some high action sporting event such as cricket.

Yes, other also have problems but there is no point in pointing fingers at others when you have issues of your own. 

We hope PEO TV resolves the problem with freezing pictures & provides a far better quality of entertainment that it does now.

PEO TV moving forward

After a few years of inactivity on PEO TV & mainly adding only local channels, its great to note that PEO TV are taking positive steps this year, now with the introduction of Setanta Sports on their platform. Sadly this still leaves PEO TV playing catch up & are still behind in terms of channels offered by rival networks.

The addition of Setanta Sports indeed is a major step forward and is a boost for Rugby fans on PEO TV. However there are still notable channels missing such as AXN Asia which is a basic and widely popular channel on pay television platforms.

We hope PEO TV closes all the gaps in terms of channels offered, and takes steps towards the launch of HD not before they solve all the freezing problems regularly experienced by PEO TV subscribers.

Discovery Kids ramps up edutainment lineup

Well its better late than never, its quite heartening to see that PEO TV have been taking steps in the right direction. PEO TV became the first locally operated pay television network to add Discovery Kids channel. This is indeed a very good move on PEO TV's part.

We hope that steps are taken to add channels such as AXN Asia, one of the most requested channels to the platform.

ESPN Star Sports to undergo major changes...


Subcontinent feeds of sports channels ESPN Star Sports which are now managed by Star TV in India, are to undergo major changes from 6th Nov 2013. ESPN exited the joint venture last year resulting in the subsequent rebranding of ESPN as "Fox Sports" in Asia. After months of deliberations it has been decided that ESPN will be rebranded under the Star Sports brand in the subcontinent instead of Fox Sports as the rest of Asia.

As per the rebranding exercise, India is rumored to get a dedicated Hindi Sports channel which will also concentrate mainly on Indian domestic sports.

Given below is a quick round of how the channel rebranding exercise will take place
  • Star Sports will become "Star Sports 1" - will showcase mainly premier cricket events.
  • Star Sports 2 will remain as "Star Sports 2" - will showcase mainly premier football events, dual language feed.
  • Star Cricket will become "Star Sports 3" - will showcase largely Hindi content & Indian domestic properties and will also be home to cricket involving India.
  • ESPN will become "Star Sports 4" - will showcase international sports content such as F1, Baseball, etc.

  • Star Cricket HD will become "Star Sports HD 1" - will mainly showcase HD cricket & football.
  • ESPN HD will become "Star Sports HD 2" - will showcase HD football, F1 & Indian domestic content.
The above is just a summary of what is expected, however it's quite clear that there will be changes to the above from time-to-time since this largely depends on the "live" properties that will be carried simultaneously. The exclusive "live" rights for the 2016 Summer Olympic games are with Star Sports and its clear that all 6 channels will the carry games depending on the number of events taking place simultaneously. At the moment Star Sports, ESPN, ESPN HD & Star Cricket are on local pay television platforms meaning that after the rebranding exercise it will be "Star Sports 1", "Star Sports 4", "Star Sports HD 2"& "Star Sports 3" that will be the channels available on local platforms. 

Star Sports 3 is rumored to be mainly Hindi, so the most obvious choice for local operators will be to swap "Star Sports 3" with "Star Sports 2", however in the long run it would mean that content on Star Sports 3 will be missed by locals since it will be mainly Hindi but not 24 hours Hindi and depending on how many "live" properties are simultaneously being carried "live", it highly likely that English content will be available on Star Sports 3 too.

So the best option would be for local operators to carry all 4 SD Star Channels & HD enabled operators to carry all 6 ensuring that locals enjoy the best of sports from Star Sports.

2013 a year in review

After a few quiet years, the year 2013 has proved to be active year for PEO TV. Beginning in January with the launch of Star Plus, Life OK & the Discovery Channel Tamil, the progress continued right throughout the year. With more international channels such as Cartoon Network, Pogo & Discovery Kids added than FTA channels, this year has seen a lot of progress from PEO TV. However still lacking are some of the most requested channels such as AXN & the launch of HD services, which subscribers will at least hope for in 2014.

PEO TV to launch HD service via SLT FTTH/FTTB service

The launch of SLT's FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home) / FTTB (Fiber-To-The-Building) service today will enable PEO TV to carry HD services.

The service will be available to areas where FTTH & FTTB will be made available, probably starting in major cities and gradually moving to the suburbs.

This is indeed great news for subscribers who are awaiting eagerly the launch of PEO TV HD. The date of launch for the service isn't confirmed as yet however with the launch of FTTH/FTTB it's likely that the service will be launched soon, initially with limited coverage.

PEO TV testing HD channels

After the upgrade carried out on their telecom services it has come to light that PEO TV is now trialing the following HD channels for selected areas from the 1st week of April.
1. Animal Planet HD (Ch.No 130)
2. TLC HD (Ch.No 131)
3. LUXE TV HD (Ch.No 132)
4. Fashion TV HD (Ch.No 133)

Additional a VOD service carrying HD trailers of movies is also available in those areas.

The above HD channels are upscaled versions of existing SD channels of the same name, available on PEO TV. The channels are now said to on trial on areas which FTTH & FTTB service are available.

Peo TV decommissioning existing IPTV platform

We have received credible reports that SLT owned Peo TV is decommissioning its existing IPTV platform that presently uses UTStarcom's IPTV solutions. This comes as UTStarcom is taking steps to halt sales of IPTV solutions due to the unsuccessful nature of it's IPTV business.

According to the information obtained SLT have already set up an alternative solution operated using IPTV solutions provided by Netgem and the system has been operational since 1st May 2014. According to unnamed SLT sources it seems that any new subscribers will be connected to the new IPTV system and all existing subscribers will be shifted to the new system by 3rd Quarter of 2015. The solution comes with a brand new STB which is expected to have the following features.

  • The new Netgem STB comes with 1 HDMI port with support for 1080p/1080i Full HD.
  • Smoother and faster EPG load speeds.
  • Fast Channel change during channel surfing.
  • Vertical Interactive TV Guide with more TV schedule data.
  • Mini TV channel list with forward and backward EPG.
  • Integrated Live TV and Time Shift TV channel list.
  • Integration of Live TV list with VOD/SVOD services.
  • PVR facility (if SLT activates internal HDD)
  • Home Media Center/Media Sharing using USB 2.0 port (if SLT decided to activate the facility)
  • Internet TV Apps - Facebook, YouTube (if SLT activates these features)
  • 7 day catch up TV since the new STB can display both IPTV & OTT content on single interface.
It's likely that SLT hasn't added any new channels so far this year and would likely not do so until all subscribers are migrated to the new Netgem platform. If new channels are added then they would probably be available only for new subscribers who are on the Netgem platform. Hopefully Peo TV accelerates the process of switching over all existing subscribers since they should be launching some new content including HDTV services soon.

Sony Six now on Peo TV

Peo TV have finally managed to add Sony Six into its lineup and it is now available on Channel 37 for Rs 127/= with Time Shift TV functions. The channel is available free of charge for Titanium package subscribers.

We are getting reports of a channel being tested on Channel No. 295 and according to unconfirmed reports it is said to be "HBO On Demand".

The Peo TV Expose!

PEO TV commenced operations several years ago, owned and operated by SLT, it has failed in making a mark in the pay television industry in Sri Lanka. Considering the size of the parent company SLT, PEO TV has been handled in a  lacklustre manner.

Recently we received insider information on the happenings inside PEO TV and the foolish practices adopted by management in order to carry out business.

There have been many times subscribers have requested for channels such as AXN, etc on PEO TV but those requests have fallen into deaf ears mainly because the content management team has formed the following conclusions.

1. Sri Lankans wish to only watch local channels.
2. Local channels should be prioritised on the PEO TV platform.
3. Help locals to start channels and add it to PEO TV platform.
4. Local channels promote education and protect culture,

In addition many PEO TV old subscribers who signed up before May 1st are quite disgruntled that they haven't been issued with the new STB since the new NetGem Netbox isn't fully functional and doesn't have services such as Video on Demand, Value Added Services and Self Service. The functions available at present are all the TV channels and 48 hours of Catch Up TV. The initial plan was to deploy the new STB before Jan 2015 but it looks like due to technical difficulties or internal wrangling there will be a delay,

It also seems that PEO TV is more concerned about allowing Catch Up/TSTV for local channels more than International channels since it is their opinion that International channels repeat programming several times but local ones carry a programme only just once.

In addition we also have reports that since PEO TV approached Sony Entertainment Asia a few years ago in a fraudulent manner by using a proxy who claimed to be running a business in the region, they are unable to secure AXN to the platform.

It seems that PEO TV have a lack of understanding on how to operate a pay television service and along with corrupt management practices they are lagging behind their competitors.

Year End Review & Happy New Year 2015

Looking back at PEO TV's 2014, we got some good news about new stuff that may happen but nothing materialised, however their is a glimmer of hope. Let's look back at the major happenings of 2014.


  • Testing of HD channels.
  • Decommissioning old IPTV platform and switching to new platform.
  • Addition of Sony Six and a few local channels.
At the moment the following HD channels are being tested.
  • Animal Planet HD World.
  • TLC HD World.
  • Fashion TV HD.
  • LUXE TV HD.
These aren't widely available since they are available to only subscribers who have access to SLT FTTH/FTTB services, which is not that many.

As with all things SLT, we have very slow progress but hopefully the migration to the new IPTV platform will be completed and then comes the switching of STB's, which would also take time. New Customers are of course getting the new STB and are on the new platform, however existing customers are not that lucky.

The most wanted channel AXN didn't come PEO TV this year too & may frankly never come due to the corrupt practices adopted by management.

Star Movies pulls out, Verbum TV to be added

Tomorrow 30th Jan Verbum TV will be added to PEO TV on channel number 93. However there is no replacement for Star Movies in sight. The rightful replacement should be Fox Movies Premium, however since this is not authorised in this region, PEO TV might replace it with a downgraded SD feed of Star World Premiere HD.

This is a big MIGHT since no confirmation is in sight. PEO TV should join hands with other pay service providers and call on Fox International Channels to release Fox Movies Premium into this region.

Also PEO TV should start looking for a replacement for Australia+ which seems to have halted transmissions into this region owing to financial issues.

Local channels the downfall of PEO TV

From it's inception Sri Lanka's sole IPTV service provider PEO TV has struggled in the pay television market not due to competition but mostly due to bad decisions and the lack of vision.

Having the backing of Sri Lanka's most experienced telco provider, they should have been market leader. However they haven't made use of that backing at all. 

PEO TV has concentrated on local/locally produced channels to drive it's business and it has failed. Channels like AXN, etc are missing from it's lineup. The conversion to the new IPTV platform has been delayed. 

HD content is available in select locations only. If PEO TV is make inroads in the pay television market, they should add more International channels, drop the local ones burdening the system.

The pay tv market in Sri Lanka is soon to have severe competition. PEO TV's decision will determine the destiny of the company.

A few changes coming your way...

According to reports being received a few changes are expected on PEO TV in the near future. From Feb 28th to March 2nd all PEO TV subscribers will be moved to the new Netgem based platform. This conversion will start from Colombo, for those out of Colombo we are not sure whether the conversion will happen on the said dates. PEO TV will visit houses and change the IPTV boxes.

Channels 15, 16 & 18 (Dream TV, Channel One Six & Knowledge TV) are to be discontinued & according to reports these channels are not available on the new system. It should be said that these channels are PEO TV operated virtual channels.

The channel slot occupied by the now defunct NTV will be replaced by an unnamed International channel. In addition PEO TV is also on the lookout for a channel having similar content as Star Movies. Any progress regarding HD content will be most likely after migration subscribers to the new platform.

We hope these things happen as planned otherwise PEO TV will face serious consequences. PEO TV remove all third grade virtual local channels & concentrate on quality International channels.

NDTV Good Times & more...

With effect from day before yesterday & as of last night Peo TV have halted the broadcast of life style & cookery channel NDTV Good Times. This move comes all of a sudden & could probably be a temporary move for some sort of maintenance work.

In other news it has been reported that Peo TV would be completely switching over all subscribers to new IPTV platform during the course of this month, however as of today there has been no evidence of this happening.

There were also rumours of them planning on addition a slew of channels, however these cannot be confirmed as yet.

Please keep us updated on the latest on Peo TV as the days progress.

Peo TV Software upgrade, etc

As per news coming out on the Peo TV camp, the last few days have seen software updates (v 7.01) being rolled out to the Netgem set top boxes. There are unconfirmed reports of some subscribers receiving the new Net Gem set top box.

However the rollout is said to be extremely slow, some Netgem set top boxes haven't received the software updates too.

Additionally channels such as "Dream TV"& "Bollywood Masala" have appeared on the Netgem platform as a result of the update.

The transfer is expected to be completed by the end of April, however this may be unlikely taking into consideration that New Year Holidays are around the corner.

In other news it turns out that cost is one of the issues preventing Peo TV from adding more International channels.

Replacement for Fox Crime

With Fox Crime due to wind up operations on 19th April, it's still not clear what will replace the channel. The most likely replacement is switching to the Asian version, however it's not confirmed whether this is even possible.

Judging by the replacement to Star Movies India hopefully it's not another foreign language channel. Also the replacement for the channel is officially Star Movies Select HD a new channel expected to launch somewhere in April. Since it's a HD channel, it will not be available on PEO TV, not to mention that Star Movies too pulled out of Sri Lanka.

So lets hope that PEO TV replaces Fox Crime India with a channel like AXN Asia!

Disney Junior testing

Kids channel Disney Junior is being tested on the the new platform by Peo TV. With competition to increase on the local pay television market Peo TV should make urgent moves to make additions or risk losing out.

We sincerely hope that more new channels are made available on Peo TV soon & the rollout to the new platform is completed ASAP.
