PEO TV's major HD debacle

$

Information is emerging how the inability to keep a business secret has cost PEO TV from becoming the first locally operated HD pay television provider in the country. According to information SLT has been upgrading capacity, etc so that PEO TV could go digital but the information leaked to Dialog TV which in turn woke up from it prolonged slumber and hurriedly launched HD.

According to information being received some PEO TV subscribers are seeing 1080i resolution options appearing on their screens but selecting them is not causing any improvement, since PEO TV is still in the process of working out their systems. Internal management problems has been deemed the major cause of the delay and probably the cause of the leak too.

Not all areas will have access to PEO TV HD services & the services are expected to commence operations from colombo. With PEO TV making the order for new Set Top boxes from UTStarcom, the launch is expected to be only a few months away.

We now have "50 LIKES" on our facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/tvradiosrilanka in just about a week. Please join us on facebook & keep yourself updated on the latest happenings in the Sri Lankan Media scene.

Over the last few days PEO TV has begun adding channels, namely Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo & KBS World. They have also launched CinemaWorld as SVOD in addition to the present HBO SVOD. According to information being received channels such as AXN, Star Plus, Setanta & Zee Studio will be added in due course. We are unable to confirm this as yet.

There is a rumour that the HD service will also be launched into selected areas.

Please keep us updated on the latest on PEO TV as the days progress.

PEO TV addes Max TV

PEO TV has added yet another local channel namely Max TV. It's reported that there are technical issues with the channel and we hope that its sorted as soon as possible. We hope PEO TV focuses on adding international channels since PEO TV has already got enough and more local channels.

There is a discussion on this regarding the fate of BBC Entertainment and CeeBees BBC. This is not a fault of PEO TV, the channels have gone off air since BBC Entertainment and CeeBees channel ceased broadcasting into this region at the end of November.

We  hope that LBN assigns appropriate replacements for the two channels.

2012 - The Year in review

2012 has been a mixed bag for PEO TV subscribers. Many hoped PEO TV will launch their HD service towards the end of they year but have been disappointed. The year started off with Star Cricket going off air. There have been a few positives with the addition of a few international channels such as Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and then KBS World. The addition of CinemaWorld in SVOD, however the channel wasn't included as a standard channel and is only available as SVOD.

The addition of local channel Max TV further increases the number of local channels on the platform. Channels such as AXN, Zee Studio & a few others were expected but never materialised. Some steps have been taken in the right direction but it seems that the management have very limited knowledge on pay television operations.

We certainly hope that PEO TV will ramp up the number of international channels and launch an HD service in 2013. Subscribers still complain of delays during changing channels and signals getting stuck and the decoder has to be restarted to restore normal functionality.

PEO TV has the tremendous technical and financial backing of SLT and can certainly provide a much better service than the one already being rendered. They are also not limited by bandwidth problems such as the ones been faced by some competitors, but with all these facilities at their disposal it's sad to see them performing below par.

Happy New Year 2013

With effect from Thai Pongal day, PEO TV has launched Discovery Channel Tamil Feed. This Tamil is feed of Discovery is not just a seperate language feed for the Discovery Channel English, rather it's a separate channel operated by Discovery Communications catering to the Tamil speaking population.

This is a very good move by PEO TV and we hope to see more new channels in the future, hopefully more English ones such as AXN, etc.

As per reports being received by us, PEO TV has added a new music channel on slot 17. We are unable to confirm what the channel is and also it's language. PEO TV seems to be on an aggressive expansion drive and we hope that channels such as AXN, History Channel, etc will be added onto the platform very soon.

Hopefully PEO is able to launch their HD service, it's good to see that finally they have woken up from their deep slumber. We hope this expansion drive sees more international channels than local channels added to PEO TV.

We request our fellow bloggers to provide us with further information about this new channel. Please connect with us on Facebook & Twitter to get the latest happenings in the media industry.

PEO TV removes Cartoon Channel

According to reports being received, PEO TV has removed a cartoon channel from their lineup. We are unable to ascertain as to what the channel that was removed but we hope that PEO TV replaces it with another cartoon channel.

It's very surprising that with all this space and with no restriction on bandwidth as some other operators, PEO TV are removing channels to make way for new ones.

PEO TV should not get into the habit of replacing channels rather they should be adding new ones while leaving the existing ones on their platform.

PEO TV removes "Taffy Kids" cartoon channel

The cartoon channel that PEO TV was reported to have removed yesterday is "Taffy Kids". The channel has been on the PEO TV lineup since their inception and they are the only pay television broadcaster to carry the channel in Sri Lanka.

With the removal of Taffy Kids the number of kids channels on PEO TV has dropped, we hope that the channel is replaced by another kids channel. PEO TV shouldn't get into the habit of replacing channels but should rather add more channels and ramp up the number of international channels available on their platform.

PEO launches Baby TV

PEO TV launched Baby TV yesterday. This comes on the heels of the removal of channels such as Taffy Kids. However this channel cannot be regarded as a replacement for Taffy Kids since Baby TV caters to an age group that is much younger than the Taffy Kids audience.

It's noteworthy that PEO TV are taking some steps to add some channels but they should add channels such as Cartoon Network Asia/Toonami since they cater to the same age group that enjoyed Taffy Kids.

We hope these channels are in the pipeline and its noteworthy that Baby TV is a channel that can be viewed at no extra cost. We hope that PEO TV will add new channels to their lineup without removing existing ones.

Nat Geo Music launched

As per the information received this morning, Nat Geo Music is now available on PEO TV channel slot 70, previously occupied by Trace TV. The package details, etc are not available at the moment but will be as the days progress probably by tomorrow or the day after.

This channel which focuses on regional music/cultures is one which is not available on any other local pay television company. Although the channel is not the most desirable replacement for Trace TV, it's a step in the right direction with PEO TV starting to add channels on a regular basis.

We hope PEO TV works out steps to add channels such as AXN Asia, etc in the near future.

Nat Geo Wild launched....

PEO TV is continuing to add channels on a regular basis as of late and yesterday they launched Nat Geo Wild. This comes hot on the heels of the launch of "Nat Geo Music" just the day before. Whilst it's a great thing that channels are being launched regularly they are not exactly available for subscribers even to those on the premium package.

This means those who pay rentals which are quite highly priced have to pay extra to watch these new channels.

We commend PEO TV for the addition of these channels but we seriously hope that it will be allocated free of charge for the premium packages subscribers at least.

PEO adds Cartoon Network and Pogo

With effect from yesterday PEO TV has added Cartoon Network & Pogo. Pogo is the indian feed since this is the only feed for that channel that available, however we are unable to confirm what feed for Cartoon Network is being made available since the Asian & Indian feed is available for telecast in Sri Lanka.

Most of the other operators have the Asian feed and its likely that PEO TV has the same feed.

The pricing of the channel seems quite high considering the fact that "Pogo" is the Indian feed, we hope PEO TV reconsiders the pricing and makes the channels more affordable and also makes it available FOC for premiere package subscribers. It's a good move by PEO TV to add new channels but they should be careful about the pricing.

We would also like to point out that since Star Sports 2 is launching on monday, PEO TV should take steps to add this channel and if so would become the first in Sri Lankan pay television company to add Star Sports 2.

Cartoon Network & Pogo added to the Titanium Package

A few days ago, PEO TV added Cartoon Network & Pogo to the their highest "Titanium Package". At the time of launch Cartoon Network and Pogo were only available as an add-on but about a week or so later  it has been made freely available to those on the highest package that PEO TV has on offer.

This is indeed a good move by PEO TV. At the moment Cartoon Network feed that  is carried by PEO TV is not Indian and is the Asian feed and the Pogo feed is the Indian feed since Pogo is available only in this region.

We hope that PEO TV considers adding Pogo to the "Platinum"& "Gold" packages since this channel is the Indian feed.

PEO TV adds Varnam TV

PEO TV has added a channel once again, and this time it's the local FTA channel Varnam TV. After years of adding local FTA channels, PEO added a few international pay channels to their lineup only to follow it all up with a local FTA channel.

Sure one of these days PEO TV will have more local FTA channels than international pay channels. It's an interesting method of increasing the number of channels without incurring too many expenses. However local FTA is not what a subscriber pays PEO TV to watch.

It's almost an year since HD was launched in Sri Lanka, but there is no hint of PEO TV HD.

We hope SLT PEO TV management takes steps to bring the channel content of PEO TV on par with others.

PEO TV to launch TV5 Monde Asie

PEO TV is reportedly testing french channel TV5 Monde Asie on channel 90. This is a mainly french channel that occasionally telecasts some english language programming.

From news, entertainment, educational programmes to sporting events they telecast a wide range of channels and is the asian arm of the the french national broadcaster that mainly caters to citizens of France and french speaking people the world over.

This is actually a good move by PEO TV to take steps to launch this channel. Although its still on its testing phase, the launch will probably take place over the next day or so. Since this channel is a FTA channel, we hope it is made available to all PEO TV packages at no extra cost.

It's time for PEO TV to take steps to launch channels such as AXN, DIVA Universal, etc on their platform.

PEO TV adds TV5 Monde Asie & Rangiri TV

PEO TV has added TV5 Monde Asie and Rangiri TV to their lineup of channels. Ironically both are FTA channels, the first being international & the latter being local. PEO TV is well on course to have more FTA channels than pay ones. One would have thought that PEO TV would have worked out a deal to carry a channel such as AXN which is basic for any pay television provider.

In addition reports are coming of PEO TV broadcasts being interrupted during good weather, the picture tends to get stuck and the no signal message is flashed by the decoder in certain areas when programmes are being watched.

We hope the management of PEO TV rectifies these problems soon and we hope that "International Pay Channels" are added to PEO TV instead of mainly focusing on these FTA ones.

Ad's to be reduced on Indian feeds of channels

Those of you who are sick of the advertisements carried on the Indian feeds of International channels over all  the pay television operators in Sri Lanka can rejoice at a recent ruling that has placed an ad cap on channels commencing next month.

As per the new regulations, advertisements on Indian feeds of channels will not 20 min per hour for news channels and 16 min for GEC's (General Entertainment Channels) from July 1st 2013.

The regulations further state that from October 1st 2013 advertisements for GEC's & news channels cannot exceed 12 min per hour.

This only applies for Indian feeds of channels being received into Sri Lanka, most of the other feeds that originate outside Indian such as those from Singapore are more or less commercial free for the most part.
